Van Eyck Pendant with Rainbow Moonstone

  • The Arnolfini Portrait by Van Eyck (1434) wormed its way into my brain about a decade ago, specifically the fisheye mirror. Van Eyck was the first painter to use this perspective. I used it as a starting point for a necklace about ten years after I first sketched it.  This pendant is set with an unusually lovely and eye-clear marquise shaped rainbow moonstone.

Moonstone gets its name from the 'moon like’, shimmering white to blue sheen that flashes across its surface. This gemstone has been valued since at least the 14th century BC when the Egyptian pharaohs wore Moonstones as protective amulets.
