They were meant to get married on 29 March in front of all their friends and family. The bride wanted something different so had commissioned a pair of hoop earrings from me.
However, Covid had other ideas. So as the bride and bridesmaid's earrings were finished, set and polished to a high shine, Covid got closer and closer to Ireland and eventually, the inevitable happened. Instead of getting married in front of a big crowd of friends, family and colleagues, they got married in the registry office, socially distancing from the celebrant and witnesses.
The swallows collection has always proved popular as bridal jewellery, but this was the first time I got to design something new specifically for a bride and one who wanted something different from the usual run-of-the-mill bridal fare. We had collaborated on the design for months previously but as a surprise I had set two little blue sapphires as her 'something blue'. It was so hard to keep it to myself. Eventually as she decided to keep her special earrings for her rescheduled big day (whenever that will be, no one knows), I shared the final images with her.
It is a story being experienced by countless couples worldwide. I feel for all of the gorgeous couples who have had to postpone their big days. Did I mention that our heroine is a nurse and a front-line worker? Her grace in the face of the impending reality, which got more and more real was immense and inspiring to say the least.
Therefore, in her honour - may I share the 'Maria' Swallows hoops.
xoxo
