An engagement ring where the stone had fallen out of its setting. My lovely client missed wearing her ring terribly. It had been sitting in a box, unworn and forlorn. The setting itself had been repaired more than once and the prongs were weak. Not only that but the setting itself was old fashioned.
To avail of this chance to redesign the ring - to not just fix it but vastly improve it, breathing new life into a treasured and significant piece of jewellery for the current and future generations.
I designed something way more modern... A fully round band with a clean bezel setting. My original drawing had a standard, thin bezel but I revised it make it 1.2mm wide... 1.2mm sounds like NOTHING right? But it added 2.4mm to the 3.8mm stone's diameter thereby making the stone in its new setting appear much bigger than the original ring.
I also perched the stone on top of the band so it could stacked with other rings if and when the client would like to add to her bling - RESULT!😃
A gorgeous new-old ring, reusing the client's original, high quality stone. In today's age of over consumption, I love the opportunity to collaborate with clients to make the most of existing materials. There is no need for precious metals and stones to lie broken and unworn in boxes at home. Stones can be re-set and metals melted down and re-used. Fresh design which honours the materials and the client's story is a vital way for jewellers to contribute in a small way to a more sustainable future.
